I wish this association and website the best in the years ahead. love the website; easy to use and will be a valuable tool for all martin landlords of the Dakotas and surrounding states. My name is Dave Duit, I'm the president of the Iowa Purple Martin Organization and our organization would enjoy working with your association in any way to increase the martin population. Welcome, Mr. Dave Duit and family of "Martineers" to our site.
I'm a newbe to this site and a wanabe Purple Martin host.
I first discovered these large, swooping, swallows about 60 yrs. ago.
I remember hearing there chatter coming from the back yard of the
local 'cities service' operator in our small village of Viking. As I headed down
the walk to discover what was making the sound, I was met by the owner, who
reminded me, not to get too close, as these birds don't like strangers. I never forgot
that, but was always intrigued by their swoop n song.
The house was a Hotel shape, supported by a fixed pole.
Although this was the only one in our town, I recall seeing similar housing /w colonies
in surrounding towns and up along the Rainy River.
Back 12 years ago, I was offered a 12 unit alum. house /w pole and winch,
my step-Dad had hosted martins in, but mysteriously lost his birds.
I moved it to our front yard in the country, near our garden site.
Been watching Martins come and go for about that long.
The info. and inspiration I acquired attending a workshop hosted by our administrator,
this past spring, rekindled my desire to learn even more to improve my site
and to attract and host PM.
I would like to invite anyone interested the hobby of housing Purple Martins and all landlords who
are willing to "Swoop" in and share your expertise and in-site on hosting these wonderful swallows.

I have turned my hobby of martins into a full blown obsession. I have around $3,500 into martin housing and I devour every bit of knowledge I can about martins. Two years ago I founded the Iowa Purple Martin Organization and it's website; http://www.iamartin.org
These days I stay busy improving houses over the winter months and give educational presentations anywhere people ask. Last year I had a great time presenting for the DNR at the Iowa State Fair. Many organizations are quickly growing throughout the upper midwest. The Purple Martin Association of the Dakotas is a class act group, and I wish them all the success in the world of martining. I visit this site as well as other martin sites.

Some of us don't admit the obsession thing.
Sounds like either hi-tech or a lot of housing. What does it include?
Do you up-grade primarily alum. housing? or all types.
Do you feel your plate near runneth over, with all that you have taken on?
I agree, the more we can share our info. and desire to bring back P.M. in
our states, the more others will join, to grow our groups, in the goal to re-
store quality housing and PUMA numbers.

Oh my, Dave; I jump through hoops to keep up with my 15 gourds and their occupants.
My pole has 16 arms, but I have to leave one empty so as I crank down the winch the 16th gourd doesn't bang my gourd.
It's a few days early here, and I hope the PMs don't show up until it's a bit warmer, but I will admit I keep looking out the front window hoping to see some activity at the gourds. The inquisitive Robin does not count.
