   Our family put up 2 Martin houses in 1972 at Blue Dog Lake, SD. We open them April 15. In the fall they are cleaned, repaired and closed for the winter. We put a few long pine needles or dry leaves inside. Want to visit a roost next fall, perhaps near Ortonville. They are great fun to watch and to listen for their chatter.
   We need to install new poles and roomier houses. Enjoy your newsletters. Come visit on July 5th, 2016 when it is quiet.

   Years ago, I had a mentor who gave me an old grandpa style metal 12 compartment matin house which I placed in my front yard. I knew nothing about martins except they ate tons of flying insects. fast forward to today and now I run an affiliated organization of the PMCA and give about six public educational presentations on martins throughout the state of Iowa. I look forward to retiring as a high school teacher and dedicating all my time to martins and their future.
   The Purple Martin Association of the Dakotas is a top notch group of martin enthusiasts that care deeply about martins and have much to offer it’s members. I feel that educating oneself about martins correlates to a larger martin population within an individuals own colony and throughout the US. I’m glad to be a small part of helping this majestic bird and I hope that others will pursue the pleasures of hosting a martin colony.
