The Purple Martin Association of the Dakotas (PMAD) will hold its 2nd annual Outdoor Martin Fest on Saturday, June 15, 2013, 9 am until 3 pm at 12345 396th Ave in rural Columbia, South Dakota (home of Paul Mammenga’s Purple Martin colony).
Purple Martins, the largest swallows in North America, spend the winter in South America. Prodigious insect-eaters, Purple Martins are entertaining, friendly and sociable, making them one of the most sought-after birds in America. East of the Rocky Mountains, these conspicuous birds are entirely dependent on nest boxes supplied by humans.
This year’s Outdoor Martin Fest features practical ideas for prospective and seasoned Purple Martin landlords. PMAD cofounders will provide programs on tracking the migration of South Dakota Purple Martins with geolocators, information on what first-time landlords need to know including dealing with site competitors, and a Q&A session.
